  New Invite Wave
By my count this current wave of invitations is the sixth wave, and
will almost certainly scale GMail up to 100 million users.

Starting with the original 1,000 users, each wave has scaled up
roughly 10 times,

1000, 10000, 100000, 1000000, 10 000 000, and now 100,000,000.

Although this is pure speculation on my part. :)

A current user base of 100,000,000 will make GMail the most used email
platform on the planet. Hotmail and Yahoomail may claim more
accounts, but a high percentage of them are inactive. Given the size
of gmail accounts, it is fair to say that a high percentage of the
worlds email will soon be stored on GMail google servers. This will
give a huge advantage to Google when it comes to search, since Google
will literally know better than anyone what the world is talking
about.

I think that the 50 invites that everyone is getting is the amount
that google calculates will be needed to reach the 100,000,000 level.

Any comments?

No Goodmail For Gmail

Leaving AOL further out on a limb holding its Goodmail playbook,
Google said it will not be instituting a payment system to ensure
email delivery to Gmail users. The power of email filtering, said the
company, should rest in the hands of its users.

  Google Domain Mail
Yesterday Google sent me an invitation to beta test the Google Domain Mail on my domain gmusers.com. I was up and running within a half an hour. Very easy. I am providing beta test accounts to members of my gmusers and gmug groups.

I will keep you posted and it will be much easier to answer questions now about this service.

Peace,
Bill

"Gmail is hands-down the best web-based email service on the 'net.
Conversation threads, search, tagging, and keyboard shortcuts have
completely revolutionized the way I look at my inbox. I manage all of
my email from my personal Gmail inbox, including the daily flood of
Lifehacker messages. At this point, I can't imagine a program I could
use to manage my email any more efficiently."

What: In a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission, a subpoena
is sent to Google for the complete contents of a Gmail account,
including deleted e-mail messages. This is unrelated to the Department
of Justice's own subpoena to Google for search terms and excerpts from
its search database.

When: U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Laporte in San Francisco ruled
on Jan. 31 and March 13.

Outcome: Judge grants subpoena and orders that all e-mail messages,
including deleted ones, be divulged.

Using Gmail as a Spam Filter
This article is almost a year old, but it shows a clever use of GMails robust spam filtering.

Using Gmail as a Spam Filter

I recently got my Gmail account up and running, but I wasn’t finding a whole lot of use for it since I have a primary account on MBoffin.com that I use for everything. Just for kicks, I decided to have all my MBoffin.com e-mail (spam and all) forwarded to my Gmail account to see how well it would handle my e-mail habits and workflows, and to see how well it would handle the spam.

Gmail did surprisingly well on all fronts. Much has been written in other circles about the nice and not so nice parts of Gmail’s user interface, so I won’t get into that discussion here.

A calendar for you and the world

Posted by Garett Rogers @ 6:45 pm

"Philipp Lenssen has found an article which contains some great sleuthing done by Paul Stone. He has uncovered a link that clearly states a calendar is on the way — and at the same time found a brand new feature Google has been working on. His discovery takes us to a page called "Google Links" where you can personalize a small bar containing links to popular Google services."
