gExodus - a graphical Gmail import tool
gExodus - a graphical Gmail import tool

June 21, 2004, 3AM CCT

Update: gExodus 0.2 is out.

When I saw (and used) Mark Lyon's Mbox & Maildir to Gmail Loader (GML) (I wrote about it), I was inspired to write a GUI version of it (I didn't copy Mark's code, just in case, though it works on the same basis). gExodus is what came out at the end of half a day's work.

GCount - gMail message count [Mac]

gCount is a menubar item that will display the number of unread messages in the inbox of a recently popular email service. It currently requires OSX 10.3 or later, though that may change.

Easily Move All of Your Contacts to Gmail

I received quite a few questions from friends wondering if they could import their contacts into Gmail. Unfortunately Gmail doesn’t yet offer the option to do this (they will in the future) unless you’re running Mac OS X or *nix (see next section), but I’ve come up with a very simple solution that you can use in the interim.

about gmail.co.uk

Regardless of whoever owns the trademark rights to Gmail, one thing is certain. If you type the name "Gmail.co.uk" into your browser, the landing page you are taken to is not one associated with Google's email service. Visitors see a form that invites users to enter their name and password. Where they are taken from there is anyone's guess.

Importing Hotmail to Gmail: An Easy Solution Using GetMail

GetMail ScreenEarlier, I had described a way to transfer Hotmail messages to Gmail using Hotmail Popper and Workspace Macro. Today I was delighted to discover that there is a far simpler solution, using a freeware program called GetMail, a memory-resident utility which forwards Hotmail to another email account.

Are Hotmail And Yahoo! Blocking Gmail Invites?

Brittany Thompson | Contributing Writer

Joel Johnson created a buzz by reporting that some Gmail invites and emails aren't getting through to Hotmail users. Several reports also claim the emails aren't getting through Yahoo! Mail filters.

New GMail Accounts = Lost Groups
People have been reporting that when they obtained and activated a new GMail account, that their ownership status is lost in GoogleGroups. This happens because your GoogleGroups account is updated to your new GMail address if you are logged into both services.

The fix is to log out, then log back into GoogleGroups with your old email address. (You may have to create a new GoogleGroups account.) When you log back in with the original address, your groups should reappear in your ownership list, and then you can add your GMail account, and give it moderator powers.

It seems also that if you are logged into GGs with a Mozilla flavor, and logged into GMail with an IE flavor, that this problem is avoided, because the cookies stored are different.

When Yahoogroups sends you the confirmation, click on the link. You will have the option of joining the group (requiring you to associate your GMail account with a Yahoo! ID or joining the "mailing list" which requires no association.

Replying to the confirmation does not work right at the moment, GMail is altering the case on some confirmation e-mails.

Import Your Mbox or Maildir Files into GMail

"I recently was invited to use Google's GMail service by a friend. As you
certainly know, Google included an entire gigabyte of storage space with
the account, which is wonderful for email packrats like me. I, for
instance, have all my email dating back from 1994 stored in Netscape.
When I realized the benefit of having all my email easily searched and
managed through GMail, I looked for an option to import my existing
messages. No such feature exists."

  GTray
GTray

Anyways, so what does it do? Basically, for those of you that are not
ashamed to admitting they use Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer,
GTray, will open a browser window and log you directly into your specified
Gmail account. Great, isn't it?

Just in case you are wondering, your password is not being stored in clear
text. I'm using encryption functions available in the Microsoft Windows
Crypto Libraries to properly store your password in the registry.

UPDATE: Since I'm super paranoid about security, I have made sure I'm
doing safe ::GetWindowText() function calls and also I have made my
dialog, PasswordSpy proof. BTW, I think I've made GTray require Win2K or
greater (I love the nice Balloon Tooltips on Windows).

Finally, you may download it here.

Email me at gtray 'at' torrez.us if you have any good comments only.

G-Mailto associates "mailto" email links on the web with GMail.
G-Mailto

From the site:

The Program

One night I was going through 250KB javascript file that is GMail, figuring out how it works. After a bit I discovered that I could link directly to the Compose page pretty easily (among other things). Mix that with some obscure registry knowledge and BLAMO! G-Mailto is born and Mailto links are no longer just an annoyance.

G-Mailto is a utility that automatically associates "mailto" email links on the web with GMail. So clicking a link like this: Email me! will open up the GMail compose window instead of opening up something like Outlook Express that doesn't work with GMail (yet).

If you are not logged in, it will bring you to the GMail login screen and redirect you to the compose window after you log in. If you use cookies then you dont even have to worry about that.
